Don’t Give In to Employee Entitlement - Here’s How To Handle It!

Every employer knows the feeling of dealing with an entitled employee. That entitled attitude makes them think they deserve preferential treatment, more money, and more time off. This can be a real nightmare for employers! But don’t give in to it - here are some tips on how to handle employee entitlement in the workplace.

Don't Let Entitlement Get in the Way of Productivity

Be Clear with Your Expectations

The first thing you need to do is make sure your expectations are clear from the beginning. Set boundaries and guidelines during the hiring process so that your team members know what is expected of them from day one. Be upfront about hours, pay rate, vacation days, and other policies you want them to adhere to. If everyone knows what’s expected from them, there won’t be any surprises down the road when it comes to performance or rewards.

Address Entitlement Immediately

If you do notice employees behaving entitled in the workplace, address it immediately. Talk with them about their behavior and let them know why it is unacceptable in your office. Make sure you focus on their behavior rather than their character—for example, “your attitude has been disrespectful lately” versus “you are a disrespectful person”. This will help keep things professional while still getting your point across without coming off too harshly.

Reward Those Who Deserve It

Make sure you reward employees who go above and beyond with recognition or incentive programs like bonuses or extra vacation days. Showing employees that hard work pays off will encourage others who may be tempted by entitlement attitudes to stay on track and stay focused on their goals instead of giving in to those negative feelings of entitlement.

Dealing with an entitled employee can be exhausting but it doesn’t have to be impossible! By setting clear expectations upfront, addressing issues as soon as they arise, and rewarding those who work hard instead of those who feel entitled, you can ensure that everyone is happy and productive at work - even if there are a few entitled employees along the way! As long as you stay firm but fair with all your team members, you should have no problem handling entitlement issues in no time!
