How to Use Humor in Your Recruitment Efforts

How to Use Humor in Your Recruitment Efforts
03/31/2025

Most job descriptions read the same. A list of responsibilities. A checklist of qualifications. A closing line that feels copied and pasted from a template written sometime in 2008. And while there’s nothing wrong with being clear and professional, there is something powerful about being memorable.

That’s where humor comes in.

When used thoughtfully, humor can transform your recruitment efforts from predictable to engaging. It gives candidates a glimpse into your company’s personality before they even click “Apply.” But like any good joke, timing, tone, and delivery matter.

The first step is knowing your audience. Not everyone shares the same sense of humor, and not every role allows for the same level of playfulness. If you’re hiring for a creative position, you likely have more room to experiment. A clever, out-of-the-box job description might resonate perfectly with designers, marketers, or content creators. On the other hand, corporate or highly formal roles often require a lighter touch, subtle wit, smart wordplay, or a relatable observation rather than bold punchlines. Before adding humor, ask yourself one simple question: Will this resonate with the talent I want to attract, or risk alienating them?

Of course, humor should never come at the expense of professionalism. The goal is to engage, not to shock or divide. Steer clear of jokes tied to sensitive topics such as age, gender, race, or health. Instead, lean into universal experiences, like the chaos of juggling multiple deadlines or the mystery of why the printer only jams when you’re in a hurry. These shared workplace moments create connection without crossing lines.

It’s also important to strike a balance between personality and clarity. A witty line can capture attention, but the essential details of the role must remain front and center. Imagine writing, “If ‘organized’ is your middle name and you can juggle multiple to-do lists without breaking a sweat, we want you!” It’s playful and inviting. But right after that, you clearly explain what the role entails: scheduling meetings, coordinating administrative details, and managing key team calendars. The humor draws them in; the clarity keeps them there.

One of the most effective ways to weave humor into recruitment is through storytelling. Instead of presenting a dry list of duties, paint a picture. Describe a typical day with a wink. For example: “Wanted: Digital Marketing Expert. Responsibilities include creating PPC campaigns, superhumanly managing 10,000 tabs on Chrome, and knowing exactly why Instagram’s algorithm seems personally offended by us.” It exaggerates reality just enough to feel fun, while still hinting at the actual skills required.

Many well-known companies have embraced this approach. Dropbox’s careers page uses casual, humorous language, casually noting that you should probably enjoy free snacks and quirky humor, or at least tolerate them. BuzzFeed once opened a Data Scientist job post by expressing appreciation for a love of spreadsheets and a burning passion for analyzing memes. BarkBox, fully leaning into its dog-loving culture, asked applicants if they were truly comfortable around dogs, because their office had more dogs than humans. These examples don’t just entertain; they communicate culture instantly and effortlessly.

And humor doesn’t have to stop at the job post. It can flow through your entire recruitment strategy. On social media, you might share relatable workplace memes that subtly point back to open roles. Your career page can feature playful team photos or behind-the-scenes videos that show genuine personality. Even onboarding emails can include a lighthearted welcome message that makes new hires smile before their first day.

That said, authenticity is everything. Humor should reflect who you truly are as an employer. If your organization is highly formal and structured, a wildly quirky job ad may create the wrong expectations and lead to a culture mismatch. Candidates look for consistency. They want to see that the tone of your recruitment efforts aligns with the actual workplace experience. If your team is naturally reserved but enjoys the occasional laugh, let that subtle warmth shine through instead of forcing over-the-top comedy.

At its best, humor is a creative and effective way to stand out in a sea of generic postings. A clever line, a relatable joke, or a playful call to action can make candidates pause, smile, and feel something, something that makes them remember you.

So before you post your next job opening, take a fresh look at it. Where could you add a touch of personality? Where could you sound more human? A dash of humor might be all it takes to turn a standard job post into the beginning of a story your next great hire wants to be part of.
