The Shifting Nature of Work

In recent years, there has been a shift in the way people work—and it's not just in the United States. Across the globe, more and more people are opting to work fewer hours or leave their jobs entirely in favor of a new path. So, why are people working less? Let’s dive into this phenomenon.

The New Age of Automation

In many ways, technology has made our lives easier. We can now do things that would have taken hours before in mere minutes (or even seconds). But automation isn’t without its drawbacks; it takes away jobs from those who need them most. As technology advances, so too does the number of jobs that are replaced by automated processes. This means fewer job opportunities for those at lower levels and an even greater divide between those with access to resources and those without.

A Change in Priorities

The rise of automation isn’t the only reason why people are working less these days. People are also starting to value different things than they did before; experiences over objects and time over money have become priorities for many individuals. As such, working long hours no longer holds as much appeal as it once did. People want to be able to enjoy life while they still can—not having to wait until retirement before taking a break from work.

The Impact on Society

When we look at why people are working less, it’s important to consider how this is impacting society as a whole. For starters, when people opt out of traditional 9-5 jobs, they often end up with freelance gigs or contract-based positions that don't come with benefits like a paid vacation or health insurance coverage—something that can be a huge burden if unplanned medical expenses arise later on down the line. Furthermore, when fewer people work traditional full-time roles, there is less money being pumped into the economy which can lead to slower economic growth overall.
